If you are missing teeth, continue reading to find out why dental implants may be a great choice for you.
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that we surgically place into your jaw. The screw is attached to a support structure, called an abutment, which anchors the implant to your restoration.
The implant and your bone fuse together during the process of osseointegration. This means your implant-supported restorations will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. Osseointegration begins as soon as the titanium screw is put in contact with the jawbone. Within a few minutes, ions and proteins will begin to adhere to the surface of the screw. During the next three to nine months, your bone will grow over the surface of the implant. The fused bone structure is very strong and allows the implanted tooth to be fully functional.
When osseointegration is complete, we can continue with the implant process. During a second minor surgery, your implant will be exposed, and we will attach the abutment. We will take an impression of the abutment and use it to fabricate your final restoration. Once the restoration is complete, you will be able to enjoy the wonderful benefits of dental implants.
Because they become a part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort associated with traditional restorations. Other restorations rest on the gums and can irritate them.
Implants are a permanent solution that will never slip or cause you to slur your words.
Implants can withstand even the strongest bite force. You will be able to eat your favorite foods with confidence and comfort.
Implants are extremely durable and last for decades. With proper care, many implants last a lifetime.
Implants do not lead to future complications with your oral health. Other restorations, such as bridges, require a complete reshaping of your adjacent teeth. Over time, this can lead to tooth decay and structural damage.
Implants eliminate the inconvenience of removable prostheses. Your implant can be cleaned and maintained just like your natural teeth.
In general, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%. Patients with a sufficient amount of bone and good oral hygiene should have no issues receiving an implant.
Tooth loss eventually leads to bone deterioration in the jaw. Without stimulation, your bone will resorb into the bloodstream. Dental implants provide stimulation and prevent future bone deterioration.
For osseointegration to take place, you must have an adequate bone density and quantity. Patients who have experienced bone deterioration may need to undergo a bone graft or sinus lift. Modern bone augmentation procedures are painless and minimally-invasive. Osseointegration may take longer for patients who have undergone bone augmentation.
