A dental implant is a small titanium screw that we surgically place into your jaw. The screw is attached to a support structure, called an abutment, which anchors the implant to your restoration.
The implant and your bone fuse together during the process of osseointegration. This means your implant-supported restorations will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. Osseointegration begins as soon as the titanium screw is put in contact with the jawbone. Within a few minutes, ions and proteins will begin to adhere to the surface of the screw. During the next three to nine months, your bone will grow over the surface of the implant. The fused bone structure is very strong and allows the implanted tooth to be fully functional.
When osseointegration is complete, we can continue with the implant process. During a second minor surgery, your implant will be exposed, and we will attach the abutment. We will take an impression of the abutment and use it to fabricate your final restoration. Once the restoration is complete, you will be able to enjoy the wonderful benefits of dental implants.
