Your teeth are a critical feature of your mouth, performing several important functions every day. They aid in the first stages of digestion, breaking down your food so that your body can easily absorb the nutrients. They control your airflow when you speak, allowing you to form specific words and sounds. They provide you with a beautiful and confident smile. They even help to maintain the health of your jawbone. When you lose your teeth, all of these functions are affected. At Newport Dental Group, we can help to restore missing teeth with dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the latest option for replacing missing teeth. They consist of small titanium rods, which are surgically inserted into your jawbone. Implants rely on a process known as osseointegration (the fusion of your jawbone to the rods). Successful osseointegration turns the titanium rods into strong, stable “roots.” Other components of implants consist of the abutments, or connectors (which are placed on top of the exposed ends of the implants), and your replacement teeth, which are made from ceramic. All of these components work together to provide you with a brand-new, beautiful, fully-functional smile.

Types Of Dental Implants

Dental implants are highly customizable. There are several types of dental implants, which can be designed to fit a variety of different needs:

  • Single tooth implants: As the name suggests, a single titanium rod is used to support a single replacement crown.
  • Multiple teeth implants: Also referred to as an implant supported bridges, these implants are used to replace sections of missing teeth (taking the place of fixed bridges and partial dentures). Your replacement teeth are supported by one or more dental implants, depending on how many teeth you are missing.
  • Implant supported dentures: When you are missing all of your teeth in your upper or lower jaw (or both), you may be a candidate for implant supported dentures. Your replacement teeth are supported by 6 to 8 implants.
  • All-on-4: Bone loss occurs naturally as a result of tooth loss. If you are ineligible for regular implant supported dentures, you may be a candidate for All-on-4. With these implants, your replacement teeth are supported by four strategically placed implants.
Procedure Of Dental Implants

Implants require a surgical procedure.

  1. We begin with a local anesthetic.
  2. We make incisions in your gums, exposing the jawbone.
  3. Next, we drill into the bone and place the implants.
  4. Your gums are then sutured closed around the implants, leaving just a small amount exposed above the tissue.
  5. Before you leave, you are provided with temporary teeth, which will help to restore some of the functions of your mouth while you heal.
Procedure Of Dental Implants

Healing can take up to several months, depending on how many implants are placed. During this time, we monitor your progress, making sure that your jawbone is fusing properly with the implants. Once you have completely healed, we then begin the process of making your permanent replacement teeth. Abutments are placed on your implants, and impressions are taken. These impressions are sent to a lab, where your custom teeth are designed and created. When they are ready, we screw them into place on your implants.

Benefits Of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several benefits:

  • They restore the basic functions of your teeth, such as eating and proper speech.
  • They restore the beauty of your smile.
  • Your oral health is improved.
  • Implants are permanent and do not need to be periodically replaced with partial or full dentures.
  • They are easy to care for and can be brushed and flossed like your natural teeth.
  • Implants are more comfortable and replacement teeth are supported by the implants.
  • Implants help to stop the bone loss typically associated with tooth loss, which keeps your jawbone strong and healthy.
